Lena Nyström
Don’t go breaking my code

Lena has been building software since 1999, in roles across development, testing, leadership and management. It is basically all she knows - she won’t be much help when the zombie apocalypse comes.

Lena found her passion in testing a decade later and has been focusing on quality in software since then. Lately she has shifted even further left - to building organizations and people. The testing community is her home and she is especially interested in asking “should we build that” when others focus on “could we build that”. Her core drive is continuous improvement and she strongly believes we all should strive to challenge ourselves, our assumptions and the way things are done.

She is the author and creator of “Would Heu-risk it?”, a MASH (Mentor and Speaker Hub, http://mashprogram.wordpress.com) core member, an avid blogger (testing.pejgan.se), keynote speaker and facilitator.

Adopt Quality Assistance and Lose Your Job*

I strongly believe that when we work together, we can achieve far greater things. Collaboration sparks better ideas and helps solve more complex problems. That’s why I’m such a passionate team player. For me, a great QA professional isn’t just skilled in various testing techniques; they’re also endlessly curious, persistent, and resourceful. When faced with roadblocks, they don't quit – they find alternative solutions. Whether that means communicating relentlessly (even if some might call it being a bit of a "pain"), trying new methods, or thinking outside the box, I’m always ready to do what’s needed to deliver results.

I also take pride in pushing people to go beyond their limits and reach for the stars. This can mean encouraging them to take courses, attend conferences, explore new ideas, or develop skills that will help them shine even brighter. In fact, I recently helped to organize a QA Summit, bringing together experts, leaders, and team members to exchange insights, explore the latest trends, and sharpen our skills. It was an incredible opportunity to grow and innovate as a community.

Over time, I’ve shifted from Quality Assurance to Quality Assistance because I believe QA shouldn’t be a bottleneck in the development process. Although I don’t write automation myself, I’ve built a team that excels at it, ensuring comprehensive coverage. Quality Assistance has not only streamlined our processes but has significantly raised the overall product quality.

So, maybe I’m not just a QA – I’m more of a leader, guiding my team toward excellence.
